What Is Low Vision?

Low vision is defined as insufficient vision which impairs a person's ability to do what they would like to do. The decrease in vision cannot be improved by conventional eyeglasses, contact lenses, medical treatment or surgery.

We use any and all means to maximize the usable vision of a low vision patient so that they can function as well as possible.

The Low Vision Evaluation centers on the "Wish List." This is a list of specific tasks that the patient wishes to accomplish with better vision. Common "Wish Lists" include:

  • Driving
  • Reading
  • Playing Cards
  • Working on the Computer
  • Watching Television

Low Vision Aids are prescribed based on these specific tasks and include optical and non-optical devices. Some examples of these devices would include:

  • Magnifying Eyeglasses
  • Telescopes
  • Electronic Visual Aids
  • Hand Magnifiers
  • Stand Magnifiers
  • Glare Filters
