Driving with Macular Degeneration and Low Vision Aides

Laws and regulations regarding driving requirements and the use of Low Vision devices vary from state to state. If your state is not listed below, please refer to the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists website or contact your Department of Motor Vehicles. You may also contact the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) by visiting www.aamva.org.

Pennsylvania

Unrestricted License: 20/40 in the better eye with or without correction.

Restricted License: Up to 20/100 combined vision with restrictions.

Bioptic Telescopes: Not permitted to meet visual requirements, but may be used for driving.

Maryland

Unrestricted License: 20/40 in both eyes with or without correction.

Restricted License: 20/70 in one eye with a minimum of 110-degree field.

Bioptic Telescopes: Program is no longer available.

Delaware

Unrestricted License: 20/40 in the better eye with or without correction.

Restricted License: 20/50 minimum for a restricted license.

Bioptic Telescopes: Treated on an individual basis.

Ohio

Unrestricted License: 20/40 in both eyes with or without correction.

Restricted License: 20/70 in the better eye with restrictions.

Bioptic Telescopes: Permitted to meet visual acuity standards with restrictions.
